New Delhi: A low-intensity explosion was reported outside the BJP office in Chandigarh Sector 37 Wednesday afternoon, police officials said. No one was injured.
According to the police officials, the explosion was heard around 5 pm, which led to panic outside the office. Police also said, the explosion caused minor damage to vehicles parked nearby, with visible impact marks on scooters and cars in the vicinity.
Kanwardeep Kaur, Chandigarh SSP said, “At around 5 pm, we got information that an explosion was heard near the BJP office in Sector 37. Our teams reached here, and prima facie it appears that a small, crude type of bomb was thrown here. NIA, FSL, Chandigarh Police, Crime Branch and Crime Cell teams have also arrived here. We are investigating all angles.”
According to the police, the attack was carried out by two men who arrived on a motorcycle.
Chandigarh BJP media cell head Vineet Joshi told reporters: “At around 5 pm, a blast occurred outside the office, and there was a lot of smoke. There was an atmosphere of panic after the blast. A scooter and a car have been damaged.”
Joshi said the blast was a matter of concern. “There are pockmarks visible on the walls. A Scooty was damaged and a car’s windows have been damaged. A blast outside a party office is a matter of concern.”
An unverified video that has gone viral shows a man pulling a pin out of a grenade, and throwing it towards the BJP office. The ‘grenade’ lands near a scooter and explodes.
Former chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh said on X: “Deeply shocked and concerned to hear the news about the blast outside the Bharatiya Janata Party office in Chandigarh.”
“I urge the concerned authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation and ensure strict action against those responsible,” he said.
