Amethi (UP), Aug 3 (PTI) A leopard that had spread panic across several villages in Amethi district was found dead, with police suspecting that it was killed by villagers.

The carcass of the big cat was recovered in Nevada village on Saturday night. The leopard had left three people injured in Bhaipur village. A joint team of forest officials, police, and district administration, had launched a 36-hour operation beginning Friday night to capture it.

However, despite extensive efforts, the animal could not be caught.

Local residents reported that the leopard attacked a buffalo calf late Saturday night and was fatally injured after the mother buffalo retaliated, Musafirkhana Station House Officer (SHO) Vivek Singh Musafirkhana Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Abhinav Kanojia said the carcass has been sent for postmortem.

“The exact cause of the death will be known after the autopsy report is received,” he added.

The leopard’s presence in the region had caused widespread fear and disrupted normal life in the affected villages. PTI COR ABN ABN DV DV
