Thrissur (Kerala), Mar 21 (PTI) The filing of nomination papers at the District Collectorate here on Saturday witnessed drama as the BJP and CPI candidates argued over who should be allowed to file their papers first, sources said.

While the CPI leaders said that their candidate Alankode Leelakrishnan should be allowed first as per the token system, the BJP contended that its nominee Padmaja Venugopal has to file the papers within the ‘muhurtham’ (auspicious window of time) which was around 12.30 pm, the sources said.

The incident happened after the UDF candidate, Rajan Pallan, filed his nomination paper.

As the filing of papers by Pallan took some time, the ‘muhurtam’ fixed by the BJP neared and they sought to file Padmaja’s nomination ahead of the CPI candidate, according to visuals on TV channels. This was opposed by the CPI leaders, including V S Sunil Kumar, who accompanied Leelakrishnan.

They questioned how the a ‘muhurtham’ could supersede the rules governing the nomination filing process.

Subsequently, the CPI leader handed over his papers and left quickly and then the BJP candidate filed her nomination within the ‘muhurtham’ window.
