Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 14 (PTI) Kerala Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty on Saturday said that there will be no power cuts or load shedding despite a rise in electricity consumption in the state.

Krishnankutty, speaking at a press conference here, said that there was no need for the people to be concerned as steps have been taken to meet a peak demand of upto 600 mega watt.

He also said that short term contracts for procuring an additional 300MW of power and long term agreement to purchase 700MW of electricity are in place and if required, due to weather conditions or technical glitches, open market procurement will also be considered.

The minister said that electricity usage has increased significant in the recent days, partly due to households relying on induction cooktops following the shortage of LPG cylinders.

He urged consumers to self regulate their electricity consumption as much as possible to ensure power supply remains stable.

He also said that a high-level meeting will be convened soon to assess the increasing the power demand and the measures to be taken to address it. PTI HMP ROH
