Karnataka has announced a ban on social media use for under-16 users, with Andhra Pradesh proposing similar restrictions. The move has triggered a debate on whether such a ban is legally enforceable and how it would be implemented. Experts argue that digital literacy, parental guidance and platform accountability may be more effective than prohibition.
Internet Freedom Foundation co-founder Apar Gupta says the proposal raises questions about constitutional jurisdiction, definitions of “social media”, and whether age verification could lead to privacy risks. Meanwhile, psychologist Priyanka M.B. says while social media addiction and cyberbullying are real concerns, a blanket ban may not work with adolescents, and could push them towards secrecy instead.
