Ranchi, Apr 13 (PTI) The Jharkhand High Court on Monday directed the government to form a committee for establishing open correctional institutions (OCIs) in the state.
Following a Supreme Court directive, a division bench of Chief Justice M S Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar directed the state home secretary to constitute a three-member committee to look into the matter and furnish a report.
The Supreme Court had in March issued directions to all states and union territories to expand OCIs.
The direction came in the wake of existing jails becoming overcrowded in states, underscoring the need to establish more open prisons to reform inmates.
The apex court had also ordered the implementation of uniform minimum standards for inmates, and provide basic healthcare facilities to them.
The case will again be heard on June 11. PTI CORR NAM RBT
