Jamtara, Mar 15 (PTI) Authorities in Jharkhand’s Jamtara district on Sunday suspended the warden of a government-run residential girls’ school after a Class 11 student died during treatment, with her family alleging that she was not promptly taken to hospital despite her deteriorating condition, officials said.
The student, identified as Chamoli Tudu, was studying at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Awasiya Vidyalaya in Narayanpur block of the district. She died on Saturday while undergoing treatment at a hospital, they said.
District Education Officer (DEO) Charles Hembrom said the girl, a resident of Kumar Pahadi village, had fallen ill and her family members alleged negligence by the school authorities.
“According to the family, her condition worsened on Saturday but she was not taken to hospital immediately. They alleged there was a delay in shifting her for treatment,” Hembrom told PTI.
Her family members also claimed that the student’s brother reached the school around 11 am on Saturday, but was stopped at the main gate.
When he returned nearly two hours later, the school authorities had already taken her in a private vehicle to a hospital in Narayanpur, where she died about half-an-hour after treatment began, the official said, citing the family’s claims.
State Health Minister Irfan Ansari, who represents the Jamtara assembly constituency, visited the Narayanpur Police Station on Sunday and met the grieving family members.
He directed officials to initiate suspension proceedings against the school warden and other teachers concerned.
A probe committee also has been constituted under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Officer Anant Kumar to investigate the incident.
The minister said a post-mortem examination would be conducted at Jamtara Sadar Hospital, and the report would be submitted to the committee.
Strict legal action would be taken if negligence is established, Ansari said.
He also announced financial assistance, housing and pension support for the family, and assured that the victim’s brother would be considered for employment in a government department.
Meanwhile, the DEO said the warden claimed that the student had complained of loose motion and vomiting on Friday night, and on Saturday morning, the family was informed about her condition and she was taken to hospital after her health deteriorated. PTI ANB RBT
