Indore, Mar 13 (PTI) The Indore civic body’s decision to rename Chhota Nehru Stadium as Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium has sparked a row, with the Congress accusing the ruling BJP of attempting to diminish the legacy of India’s first Prime Minister.

According to officials, a mayor-in-council meeting held on Thursday, chaired by Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava, decided to rename the stadium.

Speaking to PTI, Leader of the Opposition in the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), Chintu Chouksey, said, “The decision to rename the Chhota Nehru Stadium is unfortunate. People of the city had christened the stadium in honour of Jawaharlal Nehru. The BJP is insulting the legacy of the leader, who fought the British to liberate the country.” He further accused the mayor’s council of failing to provide clean water and smooth transportation to citizens, and instead making “absurd decisions”.

Slamming the Opposition, Bhargava said, “I want to ask Congress leaders who is the Chhota Nehru in their party? We are still suffering the consequences of Nehru’s policies.” Officials stated that the IMC has decided to rename the venue, next to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, as Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium, since there is a centuries-old statue of the Maratha emperor close to the premises.

Earlier, the Bhargava-led Mayor’s Council had renamed the city’s “Residency Area” as “Martyr Bakhtawar Singh Area” and the “Residency Kothi” as “Shivaji Kothi”. PTI HWP MAS ARU
