IndiGo flight makes emergency landing in Delhi after one engine failed shortly before touchdown

Engine on Visakhapatnam to New Delhi flight with 160 on board failed, prompting a full emergency at Delhi airport; Boeing landed with other engine, passengers & crew safe.

New Delhi: An IndiGo flight from Visakhapatnam to New Delhi made an emergency landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday after one of its two engines failed shortly before landing.

Flight 6E 579, a Boeing 737-800, was carrying around 160 passengers. All disembarked without injuries.

A full emergency was declared at 10.39 am, after the aircraft reported the issue and proceeded to land on one working engine on runway 28.

Indigo referred to the incident as a “technical snag”.

“A technical snag was detected shortly before landing on IndiGo flight 6E 579 operating from Visakhapatnam to Delhi on 28 March 2026. As a precautionary step and in accordance with standard operating procedure, the pilots requested priority landing and the aircraft arrived safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi.”

The airline added that all relevant authorities were informed and the aircraft is currently undergoing necessary checks and maintenance.

Reiterating its commitment to safety, IndiGo said, “At IndiGo, the safety of our customers and crew is our top priority.”

The aircraft involved had been leased from Turkish carrier Corendon Airlines.

The incident comes at a time when Boeing has been facing scrutiny globally over safety, manufacturing quality.
