New Delhi: The Ministry of Culture has launched the National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) as part of the government’s efforts to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of India, a PIB press release stated.
The NMCM is a project that will provide a comprehensive overview of the country’s 6.5 lakh villages, including their geographical, demographic profiles, and creative capitals. It will also include the creation of National Registers of Artists and Art practices, as well as the development of a web portal and mobile app to function as a National Cultural WorkPlace (NCWP).
The objectives of the mission include creating awareness about the strengths of cultural heritage and its interface with development and cultural identity; promoting and supporting cultural organizations with national presence; preserving and developing the cultural heritage of the Himalayas; and providing financial assistance for the preservation and development of cultural heritage of the Tibetan community.
The NMCM is being implemented by the Department of Preservation and Development of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture. The project has received financial assistance from a number of government departments and funds from various private sector sources.
The launch of the NMCM has been welcomed by a number of cultural organizations and artists who have long been calling for a comprehensive documentation of the country’s cultural heritage. The project is expected to provide valuable insights into the history and development of Indian culture, and to facilitate the preservation of cultural diversity for future generations.
