The World Heritage Committee was inaugurated in New Delhi on July 21, 2024. The meeting was hosted by India for the first time. The committee is responsible for managing all matters on World Heritage and deciding on sites to be inscribed on the World Heritage list, a PIB press release stated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in the meeting and addressed the participants. He highlighted the importance of protecting and preserving the history and heritage of ancient India. He also emphasized the role of tourism in promoting cultural development.
The Prime Minister referred to the recently returned ancient heritage artifacts from various parts of the world. He mentioned that this is a display of global generosity and respect for history. He also highlighted the various steps taken by the government to promote heritage conservation within the country.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the need for international cooperation in the preservation of global heritage. He called for the establishment of a global network of heritage sites that would promote mutual understanding and cooperation among countries.
He said that India is committed to promoting global cooperation and engaging local communities towards heritage conservation efforts. He also assured that the government will continue to take all necessary measures to protect and preserve the country’s rich heritage for future generations.
