Mumbai, Jul 17 (PTI) A food stall caught fire at the busy Churchgate suburban station of the Western Railway (WR) in Mumbai on Thursday morning, the second such incident in the premises in less than two months, officials said.
No one was injured in the fire, which erupted at around 8.10 am, possibly due to a short circuit inside the stall, but was immediately brought under control by timely action of a Railway staffer, thereby averting a tragedy, WR officials and employee union leaders said.
A Railway official said the fire-hit stall, selling milk, ice cream, and other milk products, is located opposite platform No.1 at the busy local train station.
A Railway employee union leader said the fire could have turned into a major tragedy, but for timely action by MS Joshi, a train manager at the Churchgate crew lobby who happened to be present nearby.
On noticing smoke and flames emanating from the stall, Joshi immediately swung into action, and exhibiting presence of mind, used a fire extinguisher to douse the blaze, said the union leader.
This was the second incident of a fire at a stall within the station premises in south Mumbai in less than two months. Earlier on June 5, a stall selling cake and bakery products was gutted in a blaze that erupted during evening rush hours.
