New Delhi: The Department of Agricultural Research and Education (ICAR) organised a special campaign ‘Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivirs’. The initiative aims to ensure the safety and well-being of sanitation workers (Safai Mitras) by providing them with personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and other protective gear. This nationwide effort will focus on creating awareness about sanitation workers’ safety, a PIB release stated.

Various activities were organised by ICAR with the aim of spreading awareness about the importance of sanitation workers’ safety in the workplace. These activities included walkathons and cyclerallies, which were organised to highlight the crucial role of sanitation workers and emphasize the commitment to their health and protection.

According to the press release, ICAR staff, students, and contractual workers conducted an activity called “Distribution of disposable gloves, masks, etc., to safeguard the sanitation workers from occupational hazards” as part of the “Swachhta Hi Sewa” campaign. The Safai Mitra working in ICAR were distributed the masks and disposable gloves by all the officers and employees of the institute. During the event, a dedicated session on biosecurity measures was also conducted to ensure the safety of the workers while handling waste and maintaining cleanliness in sensitive areas.
