Mankachar (Assam), Mar 30 (PTI) Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi on Monday alleged AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are like ”uncle and nephew” and ”two sides of the same coin”.
Addressing an election rally here for party candidate Mahibur Rahman, Gogoi said that if any Congress leader makes a remark against Sharma, even if it is in Gujarat, he is arrested, but even if Ajmal makes derogatory remarks against him, no arrest is made, and not even an FIR is filed.
”Sarma and Ajmal are like uncle and nephew. If any Congress leader from Gujarat makes a remark against the CM, the Assam Police goes to Gujarat and arrests that leader. If, however, Ajmal makes derogatory remarks, he is neither arrested nor a case registered. They are two sides of the same coin,” he said.
He asserted that just as the Congress party had defeated Ajmal’s communal politics in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Sarma’s communal politics will similarly be defeated in this election.
”It must be acknowledged that Sarma practices very strategic politics. Earlier, when he was in Congress, Tarun Gogoi treated him like a son and made him a minister despite opposition from many, but he later betrayed his political mentor,” the Jorhat MP said.
Gogoi alleged that after he joined the BJP, Sarma displayed the same “treachery” by removing Sarbananda Sonowal and assuming the office of chief minister.
Sonowal, a student and tribal leader, became the chief minister of Assam in 2016, but five years later, in the 2021 elections, he was at the helm of the state when the BJP came to power again, but Sarma ensured that he did not become the chief minister again.
Regarding BJP’s alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), key figures from the AIUDF have now joined the regional party, and there is now no difference between the two parties, he claimed.
“AIUDF leaders who are close to the CM have now joined the AGP at his advice. We must be cautious about this transformation of the regional party,” he said.
Voting for the AGP is equivalent to voting for the AIUDF, he added.
Gogoi told the people about the five guarantees promised by the Congress, which include justice to Zubeen Garg within 100 days, unconditional monthly financial assistance to women along with Rs 50,000 support for business, health insurance coverage of Rs 25 lakh for all, a separate ministry for senior citizens with a monthly pension of Rs 1,250, and land pattas for 10 lakh indigenous people.
Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel said on the occasion that under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, the real Congress will win in Assam this time, and the fake Congress led by Sarma will be defeated.
”Himanta has deceived everyone close to him. Today, the people will press only one button against him — the Congress button. He must give an account of his five years in Assam, where he has done only one thing—corruption,” Baghel added. PTI DG DG RG
