New Delhi: The weather department has said heatwave conditions will continue over east, central and northwest India in the next five days.

The India Meteorological Department said Vidarbha, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh would be worst affected while Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, interior Gangetic West Bengal and interior Odisha would be extremely hot from 27 to 30 April. Weather conditions would improve after that, the Met department said.

There is relief for northeast India as “rain and thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds” will prevail.

The Met department said isolated heavy rainfall was very likely over Arunachal Pradesh on 30 April and over Assam and Meghalaya till 2 May.

The department predicted a dust storm over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on 30 April.

Temperatures in north and central India have consistently remained above 45 degrees with rain expected only next month.

The relentless heatwave has increased demands for power and states have resorted to power cuts to deal with the shortage of coal.
