New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Haridwar MP Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank the new human resource development minister Friday. Nishank, who is close to yoga guru Baba Ramdev, is a prolific writer and has authored as many as 36 Hindi books.

Prakash Javadekar, who had held this ministry in the previous Modi government, has gone back to the environment and forest ministry along with the new portfolio of I&B.

Nishank, the former chief minister of Uttarakhand, is one of the 24 new faces inducted in the union cabinet Thursday. He hails from Pinani village in Pauri district.

A PhD from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna University in Garhwal, Nishank’s literary works include novels, short stories and travelogues. Many of his Hindi books have been translated in other languages as well.

According to sources in the government, Nishank is also close to Amit Shah, who is the new Home Minister, and Nitin Gadkari, the new Minister of Road Transport and Highways.

As the chief minister of Uttarakhand, Nishank had taken up the cleaning of river Ganga on a large scale.

Challenges ahead

As the new HRD minister, the biggest task that lies ahead of Nishank is getting the ‘New Education Policy’ out. Sources said the Prime Minister’s Office wants the HRD ministry to release the ‘New Education Policy’ as soon as possible. This was a task delayed by the previous government for four years.

Apart from the education policy, creating more institutes of eminence and reforming the teacher-recruitment process are some of the tasks the new minister will have to take up soon when he assumes office.

These are also the three issues that were listed by the HRD ministry in their 100-day plan. Even before the BJP won the Lok Sabha elections, all ministries were asked to prepare a list of the things that they plan to do in the first 100-days of government formation.

  1. There is a lot of confusion over his Ph.D because as per India Today his Doctorate is honorary while the writer of this article is yelling that his Ph.D is from Hemwatinand Bahuguna University.Do confirm!
