The Editors Guild of India called for a fair trial of noted Bengali journalist Suman Chattopadhyay who was arrested by CBI in connection with a chit fund scam.
New Delhi: The Editors Guild of India raised concern over the arrest of senior editor Suman Chattopadhyay, who was taken into custody by the CBI in connection with West Bengal’s ICore chit fund scam.
In a statement issued Thursday, the Guild said it believed that nobody has immunity from the law, but warned that Chattopadhyay’s editorial views should not be held against him or be a factor in the investigation.
The Guild called for the government to make sure that its investigative agencies will be completely “fair and professional in pursuing this investigation and prosecution”.
The Guild further urged that law enforcement authorities to provide Chattopadhyay “all the options and facilities that are available to all citizens for seeking due legal recourse”.
Chattopadhyay was summoned to the CBI office in Kolkata after several rounds of questioning and placed under arrest by officials on December 20. He was editor of the Kolkata-based Bengali newspaper Ei Samay at the time.
Also a director in Disha Productions and Media Private Limited (DPMPL), Chattopadhyay was questioned in an on-going investigation of a case registered against the ICore Group, a ponzi scheme company.
Investigation revealed that funds collected illegally by the ICore Group were allegedly diverted in the accounts of DPMPL as well as the personal account of Chattopadhyay.
