Panaji, Apr 12 (PTI) Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday appealed to political allies, opposition parties and MPs to come together for the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act, calling it a crucial step towards strengthening the representation of women in legislatures.

In a formal statement ahead of the special sitting of Parliament, Sawant described the move as a “watershed moment” in the country’s democratic journey.

The Budget Session of Parliament has been extended, and a special three-day sitting of the House has been convened on April 16. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will ensure an increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816, of which 273 will be reserved for women.

The provision to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies was brought by amending the Constitution in 2023.

Sawant said the focus has now shifted to implementing the landmark legislation enacted in 2023, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the greater participation of women in governance.

“The progress of any society is intrinsically linked to the extent to which women are empowered to lead and shape decisions,” Sawant said, stressing that legislative bodies must reflect the excellence women are already demonstrating across sectors.

He said that the move follows extensive consultations with constitutional experts and marks a decisive step towards fulfilling a long-pending national commitment.

The issue transcends political differences, Sawant said, calling for collective action to demonstrate a shared commitment to gender equity for future generations.

He urged all stakeholders to present a constructive voice in favour of the initiative, saying it would deepen democratic participation and bring renewed energy to governance.

The implementation of the law would further strengthen the country’s democratic foundations and align with the broader vision of a developed nation, Sawant added. PTI RPS ARU
