Itanagar, Apr 6 (PTI) The second edition of the Freedom Trail, a commemorative trek retracing the route taken by the 14th Dalai Lama during his escape from Tibet and entry into India in 1959, concluded at Pungteng-Tse in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
The six-day trek, which began from Kenzamani and was led by Lungla MLA Tsering Lhamu, saw enthusiastic participation from residents of Lungla constituency and devotees, according to an official release issued on Monday.
Trekkers were given a grand reception after they reached Kudung village on Sunday, where locals gathered in large numbers to welcome the participants.
The trail commemorates the arrival of the Tibetan spiritual leader, Tenzin Gyatso, in India on April 5, 1959, through Tawang after fleeing Tibet, the release said.
The ceremonial reception of the portrait of the Dalai Lama reflected the strong faith, unity and cultural identity shared by the people of the region. A large number of villagers from different parts of the district and monks from Tawang Monastery also joined the event to commemorate the historic occasion, recalling the warm reception extended to the Dalai Lama by the people of Monyul when he first arrived in the region in 1959.
