Mumbai, Mar 21 (PTI) Former Mumbai deputy mayor and sitting corporator Alka Kerkar died on Saturday after a brief illness, Maharashtra minister Ashish Shelar said. She was 74.
Kerkar, a three-time corporator from Bandra West, was re-elected in the recent Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Shelar said in a message on social media platform X.
The BJP leader passed away at a private hospital in Bandra. She is survived by a son and a daughter.
She had served as the city’s deputy mayor between 2014 and 2015.
Shelar said Kerkar, who represented Ward 98, was a retired school teacher and had an exceptional rapport with the people of her constituency.
He described her as a dedicated party worker who led a simple life and maintained a clean public image, firmly opposing corruption and illegal activities.
Recalling their association of over three decades, Shelar said they had worked together to serve people and build the BJP in the area.
