Agra: A 32-year-old flight lieutenant allegedly died by suicide Tuesday in his room at the Air Force station in Agra.

The deceased officer, identified as Flight Lieutenant Deendayal, was from the Morara village in Bihar Sharif, Nalanda district. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Speaking to ThePrint, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Suraj Kumar Rai stated that IAF officials informed the police of the death Tuesday afternoon.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police learned that the officer had returned to his quarters after spending time with his colleagues Monday night. When he failed to emerge the following morning, the airmen working with him became concerned and forced open his door. The flight lieutenant was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan with a bedsheet. No note was found.

Lohamandi Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mayank Tiwari said preliminary investigations show that Deendayal was behaving normally at dinner with his colleagues the night before. He had laughed and cracked jokes, the fellow airmen told cops.

ACP Tiwari said the postmortem revealed asphyxiation to be the cause of death. He also said the officer’s family, who live in Bihar, were on their way to Agra. They may shed light on the reasons behind his suicide, the officer told ThePrint.

The Air Force administration has taken charge of the investigation, with both military and civilian officials collaborating with them.
