Thane, Mar 24 (PTI) A fire broke out in a godown and spread rapidly to a nearby residential building, causing extensive damage, in the Mira Road area of Thane district on Tuesday night, but no injury was reported, Fire Brigade officials said.

The blaze erupted at around 8.30 pm in the godown located near the ‘Amish Park’ residential building. The warehouse reportedly stored sofas and furniture used for wedding ceremonies, which fuelled the fire and caused it to intensify within a short span, they said.

According to the officials, the presence of highly flammable materials led to the rapid spread of flames, which soon engulfed parts of the neighbouring residential building.

Several flats in the building were affected as the fire spread, damaging household items, including furniture, electronic appliances and other belongings, they stated.

Multiple fire engines were deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.

“No one was injured in the incident,” a fireman said.

The officials said the financial loss was expected to be substantial due to the destruction of goods in the godown as well as damage to the building.

The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, they added.

The blaze triggered panic among residents in the area, many of whom evacuated their homes as a precautionary measure. PTI COR RSY
