New Delhi: The Faridabad Police Tuesday rounded up four individuals, including the son of an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), in connection with the death of a man run over by a Mahindra Thar SUV the previous day.
At a press conference Tuesday, Faridabad Central Deputy Commissioner of Police Usha Devi confirmed that the Thar in question belonged to ACP Rajesh Lohan.
A Faridabad Police spokesperson refused to divulge details about the four, maintaining that they had not yet been formally arrested and that the driver of the SUV was not a minor.
The incident happened in the wee hours of Monday when the victim, identified as Manoj Kumar, was returning to Faridabad from Vrindavan on a bike.
An FIR was initially registered under section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unidentified individuals at the Faridabad Central police station Monday morning. However, the murder charge has now also been invoked in the FIR, DCP Usha Devi said at the press conference Tuesday.
On his way to Faridabad, Manoj saw two of his friends, Aman and Navdeep near Sector 12. The duo was arguing with 3-4 people seated in a Thar, Manoj’s younger brother Vickky Kumar alleged in the police complaint that formed the basis of the FIR.
The argument began when Navdeep and Aman were looking to turn towards a dhaba when the Thar, registered in an ACP’s name, came in at high speed and took a sharp turn towards their bike, says the complaint.
One of the people in the front passenger’s seat rolled down the car window and hurled abuses at Navdeep and Aman, following which the driver tried to corner their bike. Then, one of the people in the SUV asked the driver to “hit them directly”, Vickky alleged in the police complaint.
Vickky further alleged that his brother Manoj and other friends then arrived on the spot.
“When they reached there, the driver of the Thar vehicle was doing stunts with his vehicle. As soon as the Thar vehicle driver saw Navdeep and Aman, he deliberately tried to hit them directly. However, they got out of the way, but in the process, the Thar vehicle hit my brother Manoj Kumar directly, and the SUV driver fled from the spot, after running him over,” he alleged in his complaint.
