Board exams will continue offline, the Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday, dismissing a plea that asked authorities to consider other modes of assessment.

The apex court said such pleas were “misleading” and could “give false hope to students”.

The plea sought directions to all state boards, the CBSE, CISCE and the National Institute of Open Schooling to re-evaluate the decision to conduct offline board exams for class 10 and 12.

The bench headed by Justice A. M. Khanwilkar said, “This cannot become the norm. Such petitions give false hope to students. They will be misled by such petitions.”

The court added: “Authorities are already working on finalising dates and other arrangements. If there is a problem once those are finalised then aggrieved parties can approach the authorities.”

The plea was filed by students of over 15 states who wanted an alternative assessment formula for upcoming board exams.

Board exams were cancelled last year and students were marked on internal exams on a method devised by the board.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has already announced the dates for class 10 and 12, term 2 exams. They will be held from April 26.

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) will likely hold Class 10 and 12 exams in April end. Students are expecting a detailed timetable soon.
