Gangtok, Apr 11 (PTI) Senior Army officers on Saturday visited the landslide-affected Taramchu area in North Sikkim, and directed to expedite the restoration work for the early reopening of the section, according to a statement.
Road connectivity along the Chungthang-Lachen stretch was disrupted after a breach near the Tarum Chu bridge, triggered by heavy rainfall and landslides on April 5.
As many as 1,321 stranded tourists were rescued from Lachen on April 9 by the Army, in collaboration with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), district administration, and the Lachen Dzumsa.
Additional Director General of Border Roads (East) Jitendra Prasad assessed the ground situation and interacted with BRO personnel deployed at the site.
He directed the personnel to expedite the work for early reopening of the route, a statement said.
During the visit, he carried out a detailed inspection of the progress and reiterated the organisation’s commitment to restoring and strengthening connectivity in the region.
