New Delhi, Apr 6 (PTI) Doctors at a Delhi NCR hospital successfully performed a high-risk oesophageal cancer surgery on a 74-year-old patient, using a minimally invasive approach, highlighting the role of advanced techniques in managing complex cases.
According to a statement issued by Sarvodaya Hospital, the patient initially sought treatment for a suspected heart condition but was later diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus after detailed investigations.
The patient had been experiencing persistent difficulty in swallowing and breathing, which gradually worsened and began affecting his daily routine, the statement said.
The case was further complicated due to existing conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and a prior cardiac procedure, it added.
Doctors said the case was evaluated by a multidisciplinary tumour board comprising specialists from surgical oncology, laparoscopic surgery, interventional cardiology and endocrinology, following which a carefully planned surgical strategy was finalised.
The procedure involved removal of the cancer-affected portion of the oesophagus through small incisions using a laparoscope, followed by reconstruction of the food passage by reshaping and pulling up the stomach, the statement said.
“This was a high-risk case because the patient had multiple comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension and a prior cardiac intervention. Such cases require detailed pre-surgical evaluation and coordination between multiple specialities,” said Dr Naveen Sanchety, Director, Surgical Oncology.
Dr Arjun Goel, who was also a part of the surgery, said the minimally invasive approach helped reduce surgical stress on the body, which is crucial in elderly and high-risk patients.
“Using laparoscopic and robotic techniques, we were able to perform the surgery through small incisions, which helped in faster recovery and reduced the chances of complications. After the surgery, the patient was able to swallow without obstruction, which significantly improved his quality of life,” he added.
The statement also said that minimally invasive oesophagectomy is a specialised procedure that offers benefits such as less blood loss, smaller incisions, faster recovery and fewer complications compared to conventional open surgery.
