New Delhi: The viral video of a Mahindra Thar lying belly up after making a Fast and Furious-style exit through a display window has made a car showroom tucked away in East Delhi’s Nirman Vihar, a subject of much curiosity.
The showroom has since been closed, with a notice put up saying, “We are under renovation.” Showroom employees declined to speak to the media, and entry into the premises has been restricted. Shattered glass remains scattered on the road, and the Thar-shaped hole in one of the windows has been boarded up with white panels.
Since the incident, people have been milling around the showroom, just to observe the scene with their own eyes. Harish Yadav, a commuter who pulled over on his bike to take pictures, told ThePrint, “We saw a reel of the Thar accident and I just stopped by to see the showroom myself.”
Meanwhile, social media is buzzing with theories. Some say the woman who bought the car was trying to drive over a lemon as part of a good luck ritual. One X user asked, “Why were the keys even handed over on the first floor, and why was the ritual allowed to take place there instead of at the exit area?”
Some social media users have even used the incident to mock women drivers, while others have raised serious concerns about safety and the appropriateness of performing rituals inside showrooms.
The actual story may not be as wacky, but it is bizarre nonetheless.
Ghaziabad-based Maani Pawar and her husband Pradeep purchased the Thar Tuesday. However, the joy of buying a new vehicle quickly turned into a nightmare when the accelerator was accidentally pressed, causing the car to crash through the showroom’s glass window and fall onto the pavement below.
But it was not Maani Pawar in the hot seat. And the police have not confirmed the lemon-crushing ritual theory either.
The police report tells a different tale. They said the incident occurred around 5 pm while Vikas, the salesman, was explaining the car’s features to the couple. When he started the vehicle, it unexpectedly lurched forward and fell out the showroom window.
“The car was placed on the first floor of the showroom, and the delivery was being completed when the incident occurred,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhishek Dhania in a statement.
All three individuals were taken to Malik Hospital after the incident, where they were treated for minor injuries and later discharged.
“We heard a loud noise and rushed over, only to see the Thar overturned. A crowd gathered—some people were filming, while others helped rescue the occupants,” said a local vendor near the showroom.
An investigating officer from Shakarpur police station confirmed that an inquiry is underway and a detailed inspection of the showroom has been conducted. No formal complaint has been filed yet.
“The showroom has been closed since last night, and only the police have been allowed inside,” said a security guard at the site.
