Aizawl, Mar 30 (PTI) Congress would bring a “complete transformation” in Mizoram’s governance model if it is voted to power, a senior party leader asserted on Monday.
State Congress senior vice president Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, who is also Mizoram’s former chief secretary, said the party would focus on strengthening primary healthcare and primary education, both of which would be the keys to transformation.
“If the Congress returns to power, we will change the system of governance and will not use authority for personal gain. Our party president is an upright person and not someone who seeks such benefits,” he said, speaking at a party programme.
He said the party would prioritise strengthening the healthcare sector, particularly primary healthcare.
“We will focus on primary healthcare, which emphasises treatment before diseases become severe. If Congress returns to power, we will stress early detection and timely treatment. We will also upgrade primary health centres with better-equipped laboratories,” he said.
Chuaungo also said the party would undertake education reforms with special emphasis on primary education to build a stronger foundation for higher studies.
He accused both the previous Mizo National Front (MNF) government and the present Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) administration of allegedly using the education sector for political purposes.
Chuaungo said the administration should focus on development rather than functioning like a commercial enterprise.
“The government is not a trader and should not be running businesses. Many activities currently handled by the government could be managed by private enterprises. This would generate employment in the private sector and help streamline governance, ultimately benefiting the people of the state,” he said.
Targeting the MNF, he claimed that people had become dissatisfied with its rule, while accusing the ZPM of coming to power by portraying previous governments as failures and making sweeping promises.
“The ZPM claimed it would follow a research-based approach, but it is functioning arbitrarily and leading the state in the wrong direction. People are now looking towards the Congress ahead of the 2028 elections, realising that it provided better governance,” he claimed.
He also claimed that the ZPM government had earlier delayed the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections to consolidate control over the civic body.
Polling for the 19-member AMC is scheduled for April 21, while counting of votes will take place on April 27. PTI CORR SOM
