Jaipur, Apr 12 (PTI) Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Sunday said that his party is confident of forming the government in Kerala with a clear majority, even as he criticised the BJP over its handling of issues in Assam and remarks on farmers.
Speaking to reporters in Tonk, Pilot said the tenure of the Kerala assembly was to end only in May, but the Election Commission conducted the state polls early, leaving only a limited time.
“Despite that, the Congress and the UDF (united democratic front) fought strongly. Our candidate selection and manifesto, along with the five ‘guarantees’ given by Rahul Gandhi, have been well received. After 10 years of the Left government, there is a clear mood for change. We will form the government with a full majority,” the former Rajasthan deputy chief minister said.
He said what is happening in Assam is unfortunate.
“People holding responsible positions use highly objectionable language. When the chief minister makes allegations, it is considered fine; but if someone questions him, he reacts angrily and sends the police,” Pilot said.
“When the Model Code of Conduct is in place, the police and administration function under the Election Commission, not under the government. Assam Police going to Delhi for questioning people shows the kind of environment being created there. If facts have been presented by the Congress spokesperson, they should be responded to,” he said.
He was referring to the state police’s visit to Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera’s Delhi residence in a case filed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma.
Pilot accused the BJP of polarisation and said there is an attempt to create fear and divide voters to win elections.
“The BJP keeps raising the issue of infiltrators. But the party has been in power at the Centre for 12 years. With agencies like BSF (Border Security Force) and intelligence at their disposal, why has no concrete action been taken?” he asked.
He said the language being used by the Assam chief minister sends a negative message.
“If there are allegations, they should be denied or clarified. But using abusive language and issuing threats reflects intolerance. The truth should come out, and the opposition has every right to ask questions,” Pilot said.
He said the results in other states that have voted will also be in favour of the Congress. PTI SDA RUK RUK
