Bareilly (UP), Sep 25(PTI) A bullion trader in Aonla town here was killed after he was shot in the stomach while resisting a robbery bid in his neighbour’s house, police said on Wednesday, adding that the incident triggered protests from other traders.

The incident occurred on September 20 and Shrikant Patil succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, police said.

The incident happened around 3 am when thieves attempted to break into Salik Ram Maurya’s house. Patil, a neighbour, intervened and was shot in the stomach by the thieves. He was rushed to a hospital in Bareilly, police said.

Following the murder, the markets have remained closed and the traders have alleged that despite four days passing since the incident, police have not made any arrests yet.

The Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police, Anurag Arya, said the police have formed four teams to investigate the case.

“CCTV footage is being analyzed, and some crucial information has been obtained. Additionally, surveillance teams have been deployed to assist in the investigation. The police have also obtained photographs of potential suspects and are working to identify them,” said the officer.

The incident occurred in the constituency of Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Dharampal Singh. Upon hearing about the market closure, Singh visited the town on Wednesday and assured the traders that the accused would be arrested and action would be taken against any negligent police officers.

Following his assurance, the market reopened partially on Wednesday afternoon. PTI COR CDN HIG
