Mumbai, Apr 1 (PTI) BJP leader Kirit Somaiya on Wednesday wrote to Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti demanding that police should not impose restrictions on Hindu religious processions.

“Police should stop imposing restrictions in the name of guidelines. If there are procedures, they should be reviewed to ensure that processions are allowed without obstruction,” he said in the letter.

Police had laid down rules for processions on this year’s Ram Navami (March 26) and during other festivals such as they must not pass in front of mosques or should be carried out in silence near such locations, the former MP said.

Ram Navami processions in Ghatkopar, Powai and Chembur were stopped citing prayer time and the use of sound systems near mosques was restricted, he complained.

A procession in Ghatkopar was stopped for 45 minutes, Somaiya alleged. PTI ND KRK
