Jaipur, Mar 28 (PTI) Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday accused the BJP-led state government of neglecting sports infrastructure, alleging delay in construction of a proposed international cricket stadium near Jaipur.
In a statement, Gehlot said that the project — envisioned during the previous Congress government headed by him — was aimed at building the world’s third-largest and India’s second-largest cricket stadium.
Foundation stone for the stadium was laid on February 5, 2022, with a plan to develop it in phases. The stadium was envisioned to have an initial seating capacity of 45,000, which was expandable up to 75,000.
Gehlot said the first phase was scheduled for completion within 24 months, or by February 2024, but it remains incomplete even after 36 months.
Alleging lack of intent, the Congress leader said there were no signs of the project getting completed in the near future and alleged that the government is putting development works on the “back burner”.
Gehlot also warned that any delay would lead to escalation in cost, ultimately burdening the public. He further urged the government to cast aside political differences and expedite the project. PTI AG RUK RUK
