To support the growing number of electric vehicles on the road, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established a new set of safety standards.
IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024 focus on the powertrain, which is the critical component of electric vehicles. These standards ensure that the powertrain meets stringent safety requirements, and that batteries are powerful and secure, said the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in a statement.
It added that to address the safety of electric vehicles, BIS has also introduced IS 18294: 2023, which establishes safety standards specifically for e-rickshaws and e-karts. These standards cover various aspects, from construction to functionality, ensuring the safety of both drivers and passengers.
The new standards will help to raise the level of safety and performance of electric vehicles in India, and provide a level-playing field for the promotion of sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation.
