Patna, Jul 11 (PTI) The Bihar transport department has suspended driving licences of 578 people in Patna for “violating” traffic rules frequently since January this year, officials said on Friday.
Besides, around 900 vehicles have been identified by the District Transport Office (DTO), Patna, for cancellation of registration, they said.
A statement, issued by the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD) of the state government, said, “Based on the data received from the District Transport Office (DTO), the traffic police had proposed the cancellation of driving licences of 988 vehicle owners from January 2025 to June 2025. Out of these, the licences of 578 vehicle owners have already been suspended, and show-cause notices have been issued to them.” Additionally, around 900 vehicles have been identified by the DTO for cancellation of registration, it said.
The responses from these vehicle owners will be reviewed before proceeding further, the officials said.
Information is being sent to the registered mobile numbers of the vehicle owners, they said.
“Action for suspension of driving licences is taken in cases of repeated traffic violations or if vehicle documents and the DL are found invalid during inspection. If a licence is found to be already suspended during checking, the traffic police impose a fine of Rs 5,000 on the vehicle owner. A driving license can be suspended for a minimum period of three to six months,” an official said.
Patna DTO Upendra Kumar Pal said that many drivers in the district drive recklessly, increasing the risk of accidents.
He warned vehicle owners that strict action would be taken against those found violating traffic rules.
This could include suspension of their driving licences or cancellation of vehicle registration.
“In the past six months, the licensing authority has approved the cancellation of driving licences of more than 30 vehicle owners”, he said. PTI PKD BDC
