Madhepura (Bihar), Apr 8 (PTI) Bihar Police on Tuesday arrested a husband-wife duo for allegedly duping a contractor of Rs 34.74 lakh by posing as senior government officials and promising to secure contracts, officials said on Wednesday.

The accused have been identified as Sunny Kumar Rai and his wife Shraddhanjali Devi.

Madhepura DSP (Headquarters) Manoj Mohan said, “Both accused were arrested from Patna following raids and sent to judicial custody. The woman allegedly impersonated an IAS officer, while Rai acted as her bodyguard. They used a vehicle fitted with a fake government placard to mislead people.” A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Sadar police station on February 8, based on a written complaint filed by Narayan Yadav, a Madhepura resident, he added.

According to the complainant, he came in contact with the accused during a religious gathering at Singheshwar in Madhepura district last year.

Rai allegedly introduced a woman (his wife) to Yadav as an IAS officer posted in the General Administration Department of the Bihar government, and claimed that her husband was also an IAS officer, according to the complaint.

“Rai later allegedly assured the complainant that he could help him secure government contracts. On this pretext, he is said to have fraudulently obtained Rs 34.74 lakh from Yadav through various transactions,” the DSP said.

During a subsequent interaction in Madhepura, when asked for refund, the accused allegedly assaulted the complainant and snatched his iPhone before fleeing, police said.

A similar case was registered against the couple in the past as well, they added. PTI COR SUK MNB
