Bengaluru, Mar 28 (PTI) The Bengaluru North City Corporation on Saturday presented its maiden Budget with an outlay of Rs 4,341.20 crore, focusing on infrastructure and welfare.
This is the first Budget presented after the creation of the Bengaluru North City Corporation.
Bengaluru was divided into five new municipal corporations—Central, East, West, North and South—under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) in September 2025, replacing the single Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
The Budget was presented by Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar at Dr B R Ambedkar Bhavan near Yelahanka.
In the absence of an elected body, the Commissioner presented the Budget. Elections for the five corporations are likely later this year.
For the financial year 2026–27, the total revenue of the Bengaluru North City Corporation is estimated at Rs 4,344 crore, while expenditure is projected at Rs 4,341.20 crore.
From its limited revenue collection, the corporation will undertake road, drainage and footpath repairs and maintenance during 2026–27, the Commissioner said in his Budget speech.
For this, allocations have been made for all 72 wards: Rs 20 lakh per ward for desilting drains, Rs 10 lakh per ward for filling potholes, Rs 25 lakh per ward for footpath repairs and maintenance, and Rs 20 lakh per ward for traffic engineering-related works, totalling Rs 75 lakh per ward.
Additionally, Rs 1.50 crore per ward has been earmarked for various development works, including ward-level roads and major road repairs, taking the total allocation to Rs 2.25 crore per ward, he added.
Noting that Rs 25 lakh per ward has been allocated for pedestrian path repair and reconstruction—totalling Rs 18 crore—the Commissioner said this would encourage public use and help develop 1,000 km of well-structured pedestrian paths.
For pedestrian convenience, Rs 50 crore has been allocated for developing junctions, constructing skywalks and related infrastructure within the corporation limits.
An allocation of Rs 10 crore has been made for the repair and maintenance of stormwater drains in 2026–27 to ensure flood control during the rainy season.
For a well-lit and safer Bengaluru, Rs 9.40 crore has been earmarked for the repair and maintenance of streetlights and related equipment, as well as electrical works in buildings, playgrounds, parks, community halls and substations, he added.
The Budget also proposes the comprehensive development of Singapore Lake and the revival of non-functional lakes such as Banaswadi, Lingarajapura, Battaguntepalya and Ramachandrapura through detailed project reports, with selected lakes to be taken up for development.
Under ‘Mission Clean Airport Road’, about 34 km of Bellary Road leading to the international airport has been cleaned, it said.
The Budget allocates Rs 1 crore under the Smart Education Scheme to install smart panels in municipal schools and colleges to enhance digital learning.
For housing, Rs 71.07 crore has been allocated for 2026–27. Of this, 50 per cent will be used for the single-house scheme, and the remaining 50 per cent will be used to provide housing through the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation to eligible beneficiaries.
The corporation aims to provide a subsidy of up to Rs 5 lakh to around 1,420 beneficiaries.
Under health programmes, Rs 11.12 crore has been allocated to provide medical assistance to residents, including those suffering from serious illnesses such as heart disease, kidney failure and cancer.
An allocation of Rs 7.60 crore has been made to distribute free laptops to students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, backward and minority communities pursuing degree courses. Around 1,200 beneficiaries are expected to benefit.
A 100-bed hospital is being constructed in the Sarvagnanagar and Byatarayanapura Assembly constituencies.
Facilities for about 500 dogs—including shelter, treatment, surgical care, quarantine and feeding—will be created, with Rs 3.80 crore allocated for the project. An animal crematorium will also be set up, the Commissioner said.
Additionally, Rs 1.50 crore has been allocated for measures to manage street dogs and ensure public safety in urban areas, he added. PTI KSU SSK
