New Delhi, Apr 8 (PTI) Renowned physicist Ajit Kumar Mohanty on Wednesday was given a one-year extension as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), according to a personnel ministry order. This marks Mohanty’s second extension in this role, as he had received a six-month extension last year. He was originally appointed as DAE Secretary in April 2023, with a tenure lasting until he turns 66, which will be on October 10, 2025. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Mohanty as Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission for a further period of one year, with effect from April 11, 2026, in relaxation of the provisions of Fundamental Rule 56 (d), the order stated.

The rule has provisions to extend the services of such incumbents. Born in Odisha, Mohanty was serving as the Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) when he was appointed as chief of the Atomic Energy Commission. Previously, he held the position of general secretary and later president of the Indian Physics Association. Mohanty has also served as spokesperson for the India-CMS collaboration, Director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, and Director of the Physics Group at BARC.

He has been a CERN Scientific Associate twice, first from 2002 to 2004 and again from 2010 to 2011. PTI AKV AKV MPL MPL
