Guwahati, Apr 3 (PTI) Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and his ally AJP chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Friday participated in a roadshow in support of the opposition alliance’s candidates in two assembly seats in Guwahati.

The two leaders, surrounded by supporters of both parties, took part in the procession from Rajgarh to Six Mile area of the city, passing through Guwahati Central and New Guwahati constituencies.

Accompanied by Congress’ New Guwahati candidate Santanu Bora, Gaurav and Lurinjyoti stood atop a vehicle and greeted people along the route.

AJP’s Guwahati Central nominee is Kunki Chowdhury.

The Congress and the AJP are part of a six-party opposition alliance for the Assam assembly polls.

Earlier in the day, the state Congress president and the AJP chief also participated in a joint campaign for the opposition’s Sarupathar candidate Jiban Chutia of the AJP.

Addressing the gathering, Gaurav Gogoi alleged that the Himanta Biswa Sarma government has “failed to ensure justice” in the singer Zubeen Garg’s death case.

He said the BJP stands “opposed to the ideals of Garg”, and claimed that Sarma has “close links with those responsible for killing the singer”.

He assured that if voted to power, the Congress will deliver justice in the case within 100 days.

The Congress leader also accused the BJP-led NDA government of running syndicates involving cattle, coal, sand and stone.

Gogoi said strict action would be taken against anyone making remarks against any religion, while asserting that Assam has always been a “land of harmony”.

Reacting to Sarma’s remarks on purported food habits of Kunki Chowdhury’s mother and social media posts, the Congress state president said that such comments “exposed the chief minister’s character”.

“He has lowered the dignity of his office through inappropriate public remarks,” Gogoi alleged.

AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, also addressing the meeting, urged the people to defeat leaders “who divide society”.

He criticised the government for “failing” to address core issues like price rise and providing land rights to the people.

Gogoi emphasised that government schemes are funded by public money and beneficiaries are not subservient to any political party, assuring that no woman would be harassed in the name of schemes if the opposition alliance comes to power.

Elections for the 126-member Assam assembly will be held on April 9, with counting of votes scheduled on May 4. PTI SSG SSG BDC
