Lucknow, Mar 10 (PTI) Around 19 people who had donated blood at a camp held in Lucknow last month have tested positive for Hepatitis B, officials said on Tuesday.
Lucknow Chief Medical Officer Dr NB Singh told PTI, “A camp was held on Sunday to reconfirm the initial test.” He said that the move is a precautionary measure to verify the initial finding and assess the health status of those who had participated in the camp.
“Reports are being cross-checked. The second sample of all the 19 people who had (initially) tested positive was taken on Sunday.” He added that the blood donation camp was held at Munshi Khera and three other villages in Lucknow’s Malihabad block on February 27.
More samples were taken (as compared to the camp), the CMO said, and added that the samples have been sent to KGMU for testing.
According to the World Health Organisation, Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease.
The virus is most commonly transmitted from mother to child during birth and delivery, in early childhood, as well as through contact with blood or other body fluids during sex with an infected partner, unsafe injections or exposures to sharp instruments. PTI NAV SHS
