New Delhi, Mar 30 (PTI) BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Monday hailed the Modi government for its efforts to end Left-Wing Extremism in the country, and accused the Congress of rolling out a “red carpet” for the Naxalites’ “Red Corridor” when it was in power at the Centre.
Participating in a debate in the Lok Sabha on ‘Efforts to free the country from Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)’, Thakur also said that Naxalism continued to remain a menace in different parts of the country for several years because the leadership of the erstwhile Congress-led government was “weak”.
“Naxalism bled the country as the Red Corridor expanded to 126 districts. If anyone surrendered before Naxalism, it was the Congress… It rolled out a red carpet for the Red Corridor,” the BJP MP charged.
Thakur also said that Naxalism is confined to less than two districts in the country only because of the Modi government’s resolve and decisive action against the menace.
“Our leader (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) had vowed to end Naxalism by March 31, 2026. While there is still one day left to meet the deadline, Home Minister Amit Shah has come up with a report. This is ‘Sankalp se siddhi ki yatra’ (journey from resolution to accomplishment),” Thakur said.
“For 60 years, you remained in power and kept surrendering. We did not. It’s the Modi government which eventually found the cure to the disease and freed the country from Naxalites. You could not,” the BJP MP said in an apparent attack on the Congress and its allies.
Thakur also trained his guns at Rahul Gandhi, pointing out that the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha was not present in the House when a discussion was happening on the efforts taken to free the country from LWE.
Thakur also said the Naxal menace could have ended much earlier had then-Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel cooperated with the Centre.
“Congress leaders had also been killed (in a Naxal attack) in Chhattisgarh. Yet, Bhupesh Baghel did not show any seriousness. He did not cooperate with the Central government,” the BJP MP claimed.
Replying to the debate in the Lok Sabha later, Home Minister Amit Shah declared that the country has become free from Naxals, with the apex body of the Maoists and the central structure almost completely dismantled.
Giving details of the success achieved by the security forces against the Naxals, Shah said all members of the state committees of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh have surrendered, and of the four remaining in Odisha, one has surrendered, and three have been killed.
In Telangana, six have surrendered, three have been killed, and now not a single one remains there, he said. PTI PK PK ARI ARI
