New Delhi, Apr 12 (PTI) The Congress on Sunday condoled the demise of legendary singer Asha Bhosle, with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge saying that an era of playback singing has come to an end.
Bhosle, who stepped out of her sister Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar’s shadow with a genre-defying voice and created her own universe in Hindi playback singing, passed away on Sunday.
The 92-year-old was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday evening due to a chest infection and exhaustion.
“In the passing away of Asha Bhosle, an era of playback singing comes to an end. An epitome of legendary versatility and grace, her unique style of singing was appreciated by millions across the globe,” Kharge said in an X post.
“A Padma Vibhushan recipient, Bhosle remains one of the most recorded artists ever. From Hindi film songs to soulful ghazals, from bhajans to qawwalis, she has rendered it all in several languages,” the Congress chief said.
“My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and innumerable fans,” he said.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that through her voice, Bhosle’s art will forever remain immortal among people.
In an X post in Hindi, Gandhi said the news of her demise was deeply saddening.
“Through her voice, her art will forever remain immortal amongst us. In this hour of grief, my deepest condolences are with her bereaved loved ones and admirers,” Gandhi said.
The Congress also took to X to condole the singer’s demise.
In a post in Hindi, it said the passing of the renowned singer was an irreparable loss to the world of music.
“Through her art, Asha Ji elevated India’s name across the globe. Her melodious voice will live forever in our memories,” the party on its official X handle.
“May God grant peace to the departed soul and provide strength to the grieving family and admirers during this difficult time. Heartfelt tribute,” it wrote.
Asha Bhosle, who got married to Ganpatrao Bhosle in 1949 at the age of 16 and later married collaborator and composer R D Burman, is survived by her son Anand and her grandchildren.
“People can pay their last respects to her at 11 am on Monday at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, where she lived. Her last rites will be performed at 4 pm at Shivaji Park,” Anand told reporters. PTI ASK RUK RUK
