New Delhi: Public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati Thursday announced a re-run of the mythological show Shri Krishna on Doordarshan.

The move comes after Prasar Bharati decided to re-telecast Mahabharat and Ramayan following people’s demands during the nationwide lockdown.

Prasad Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar also confirmed the news and said the broadcast was “coming soon”.

Shri Krishna is an Indian television epic series which showcases the life of Lord Krishna, who is worshipped as the eighth incarnation of Hindu god Vishnu. The most basic source of Krishna’s mythology can be sourced back to the epic Mahabharata.

On public demand

A majority of Indians are being forced to observe quarantine to avoid transmission of the highly contagious novel coronavirus. In light of this nationwide lockdown, there has been a public demand to air these mythological series on Doordarshan.

Twitter users demanded a re-run of film director Ramanand Sagar’s Shri Krishna, which was first aired in 1996 on Doordarshan.

Prior to this, Prasar Bharati also ran a re-telecast of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, which was first aired in 1987 on Doordarshan. This series was based on the Hindu epic Ramayana believed to have been written by Valmiki around 300 BCE. A poem, it traces Hindu deity Rama’s journey.

Film director B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharata, which was first aired in 1988 on Doordarshan, was also re-telecast during the lockdown. Based on Sage Vyasa’s epic, Mahabharat narrates the struggle for ‘sovereignty‘ between the two groups of cousins, the Kauravas and Pandavas.
