Kolkata, Mar 26 (PTI) One flight had to be diverted to another airport as operations at the NSCB airport here were disrupted for nearly an hour on Thursday due to adverse weather conditions, officials said.
The disruption, caused by a thunderstorm with rain, took place between 4.22 pm and 5.19 pm, affecting normal flight movements.
“A total of four flight arrivals and six departures were reported during this period. However, one flight had to be diverted to an alternative airport due to unsafe landing conditions,” an Airports Authority of India (AAI) spokesperson said, without specifying the airport to which the flight was diverted.
The AAI official explained that owing to TSRA (Thunderstorm with Rain), a weather condition that includes lightning, strong winds and heavy rainfall, take-off and landing operations become risky.
Due to the thunderstorm activity, the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) had to temporarily regulate flight movements to ensure passenger safety, leading to delays and diversions.
Flight operations gradually returned to normal after the weather improved.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s private plane, scheduled to land around that time, was unable to touch down for some time due to the storm. It finally landed at 5.19 pm, an official said. PTI SUS MNB
