New Delhi, May 10 (PTI) “Baaghi Albele”, a satirical comedy about artistes and their resilience against government repression, will be staged here at Kamani Auditorium on May 13-14 as part of the 6th edition of Aadyam Theatre.

Set in Ludhiana in Punjab, the story portrays the struggle of artists and intellectuals during a time of government repression, reflecting on the importance of art and artists in contemporary times.

Directed by actor-director Atul Kumar, the play boasts of a stellar line-up of Gagan Dev Riar, Ayesha Raza, Taranjit Kaur, Ujjwal Chopra, Saurabh Nayyar, and Harsh Khurana, among others.

Talking about the show, Kumar said that the “Orwellian image” is coming true in India where “the freedom of art and artistes is under siege”.

“It is within this political-cultural climate, where art and artistes’ freedom are targeted, that we set our play, Baaghi Albele. An attempt to underline, through our performance, the relevance of art and artistes to the healthy growth of a nation. And their resilience and resolve to exist, to express themselves, and to fight against all hurdles and curbs. I honestly couldn’t think of a better story to adapt and play out as a farce,” Kumar said.

Originally based on the motion picture “To Be or Not to Be” by Ernst Lubitsch and adapted by Nick Whitby, the story has been “re-created and improvised” by the play’s actors and writers.

It follows the journey of actors husband and wife as they find themselves at the centre of a dangerous situation where they, along with a troupe of actors, must use their wit and theatrical skills to stay one step ahead of the government spy on their trail. PTI MAH MG MG MG
