Aizawl, Mar 26 (PTI) A total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, from four major political parties have filed their nominations for the upcoming polls to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), election officials said on Thursday.
Polling to the 19-member municipal corporation will be held on April 21 and counting of votes will take place on April 27.
According to officials, the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Congress have fielded 19 candidates each, with the window for filing nominations closing on Wednesday.
The BJP has nominated 11 candidates, they said.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on March 27 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is fixed on March 30, they said.
Over 2.37 lakh electors, including 1.28 lakh women voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the AMC polls.
There are 19 wards under the municipal corporation and six of those are reserved for women. Both men and women are eligible to contest the remaining 13 wards.
In the last AMC polls held in February 2021, the MNF secured a majority, winning 11 seats, while the ZPM bagged six seats and Congress two. PTI CORR ACD
