7 security personnel dead, several injured as bus rolls down gorge in Kashmir

The men were on their way to be re-inducted after duty at the Amarnath Yatra which concluded on 11 August.

New Delhi: Seven security personnel have been killed and several injured Tuesday when a bus carrying a contingent of 39 fell in a river bed between Chandanwari and Pahalgam in Kashmir.

The injured were air-lifted to Srinagar’s Army Hospital for further treatment.

It is reported that the brakes of the vehicle failed while on the way from Chandanwari to Pahalgam. There were 37 Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel travelling along with two Jammu and Kashmir cops. The deceased are from the ITBP.

The officers were returning from duty at the Amarnath Yatra that concluded on 11 August, according to news agency PTI.

An ITBP spokesperson said in Delhi: “A bus carrying 39 personnel fell down into a roadside river bed after its brakes reportedly failed. The troops were on their way from Chandanwari to Pahalgam. Casualties are feared and more details are awaited.”
