Gondia, Mar 26 (PTI) In a suspected case of food poisoning, at least 45 students of a government-run nursing college in Maharashtra’s Gondia were hospitalised as they took ill after having dinner at the institute’s mess, officials said on Thursday.

All the students are out of danger and most of them are likely to be discharged soon, they said.

The students belong to the Government Nursing College located within the campus of KTS District Government Hospital and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Gondia.

There are around 185 students of the nursing college who stay in hostels.

On Wednesday, after having their dinner at the mess located inside the college, around 45 students started complaining of stomach pain, vomiting and loose motion. They were admitted to the GMCH on Thursday morning, where a team of expert doctors is monitoring their condition, the officials said.

GMCH dean Dr Kusumakar Ghorpade said some of the students were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in view of their initial condition.

“But there is nothing to worry as all the students are fine and most of them are likely to be given discharge by tonight,” he said.

District civil surgeon Dr Purushottam Patle said these students had consumed ‘khichdi’ and ‘kadhi’ at the mess, after which some of them experienced health problems like vomiting.

“We have collected the samples of food and water from the mess, and sent them to the Food and Drug Administration’s laboratory for testing. The exact reason will be known once the report comes,” he said. PTI COR NP
