Mumbai: The Mumbai Police have arrested four Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly used fake documents to live in India’s financial hub, with some even having voted in the Lok Sabha elections that concluded this month.

Following a tip-off, the Juhu unit of the anti-terror squad (ATS) picked up Riyaz Hussain Shaikh (33), Sultan Siddique Shaikh (54), Ibrahim Shafiulla Shaikh (44), and Farookh Usmangani Shaikh (39).

An ATS statement said the accused had acquired Indian passports using addresses in Surat and entered the country several years ago. They lived in different parts of the city.

Officers said the ATS had identified five more Bangladeshis living illegally in the city, of whom one travelled to Saudi Arabia for work.

The squad has registered a case under sections 465, 468, 471, 34 (charges for forgery), and 12(B) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 12(1)(A) of the Passport Act, 1967. A probe is underway to check if they were involved in terror-related activities.

The ATS presented all four accused before the Mazgaon Court Tuesday. The court sent three of them to judicial custody. The fourth has been sent to ATS custody till 14 June.
