Balaghat (MP), Mar 29 (PTI) Three members of a family, including a four-year-old boy, were burnt alive, while two others were grievously injured, as their car caught fire after falling into a ditch in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district, police said.

The accident occurred near the Kelwari square on the Baihar-Malajkhand Road late on Saturday night, Baihar station house officer (SHO) Jayant Maskole told PTI.

Seetram Kelkar (35) and his mother Nanabai (60) sustained severe injuries and have been admitted to a facility in Gondia in neighbouring Maharashtra, while his father Nagarchi Kelkar (65), wife Savita (32), and their son Abvi (4) were charred to death, he said.

Poorvi Rahangdale (8), a neighbour’s daughter, who was travelling with the Kelkar family, escaped unhurt, the official said.

The victims were locals and were returning home to Pauni in a hatchback car with Seetram at the wheel, he said.

According to the police, Seetram lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall into a ditch. The vehicle immediately caught fire, and all occupants were trapped inside.

Passersby broke the windows of the car and managed to extricate three occupants, but the flames engulfed the entire vehicle, and the others could not be rescued, the official said.

The police and fire brigade were alerted, but the vehicle was charred by the time they arrived at the scene. PTI LAL ARU
