Kathmandu: After the violence, Kathmandu saw a series of cremations of Gen Z protesters who died in clashes with the police. Common people joined processions with flowers and cries of “Bir Shaheed Amar rahe”.
More than 70 people, mostly men between the age of 20 and 27 were killed in the violent protests that erupted last week in Nepal. The protests led to K.P. Oli Sharma resigning as PM and a new PM Sushila Karki being sworn in.
The funeral procession started from the Teaching Hospital mortuary where all the bodies were kept, and moved towards the Pashupatinath crematorium through the Ring Road. Accompanying those on foot were bikes carrying the national flag and shouting slogans of “Long live Nepal”.
Many stood outside their homes to witness this historic final goodbye to the protesters. Thousands gathered at the ghat, grieving with the families, even if they did not know them. Protesters who died were given a guard of honour and designated ‘martyrs’.
